Visions for Transformation

Amid the upheavals of 2020, Oakland’s concrete and brick walls become canvases for artist Rachel Wolfe-Goldsmith, whose monumental murals transform public space into urgent calls for creativity and transformation. Blending Afro-futurist vision with the realities of a city in pain, their work bridges past to the future and the physical reality to the realm of possibility. 

As rising costs push artists out and community space becomes scarce, one mural in West Oakland that Wolfe paints—which honors the humanitarian legacy of the women of the Black Panther Party—sparks a turning point for Wolfe.  Inspired by the Panther’s model of community care and self-determination, Wolfe steps beyond painting to embody Oakland’s ethos: “if you don’t see it, build it.”
